In Haunted, Eileen Maksym has written a classy ghost story for the 21st century. It's classy because, while there is paranormal activity and there is romance, this is not a bodice ripper with fangs. The author draws upon classic lore of the genre, combined with modern paranormal investigation techniques, but makes both of them feel fresh because of the earnestness of her characters' approach to them. It's for the 21st century because it is very mindful of the modern world's skepticism for all things supernatural. Maksym weaves in details of psychological and neurological theory in a subtle way that would actually be a spoiler if I told you much more about it. Haunted is sweet and mindful, but also intense with action rising quickly. This is a well-written novella with characters you'll care about, an engaging plot, and a satisfying ending. This book has a wonderful entry, I really loved the prologue. It starts with a haunted house article in the newspaper which encouraged the SPR (society of paranormal researchers) consisting of three friends- steven, tara and paul. This journey of three friends trying to unravel the mystery behind the house and at the same time trying to prove that they were more than just crazy teenagers was amazing.
Haunted by Eileen Maksym was dark, horror and also funny, and combing dark and horror with funny is very difficult job, but the author has effortlessly expressed these two genres together. I honestly have no complaints…. But wait, maybe one that this book was quite small, I wish it would have been longer but despite this, the book will be worth your time.
Now something about the characters…..
Tara Martin was a very smart character and she wasn’t one of those female characters who just stands in the corner screaming when there’s a fight going on, she’s the one who jumps right in, which is great. Steven Trent had a good sense of humor, he was sweet, caring and had a huge crush on Tara. He was my favorite character in this book, he was very brave and handled things nicely. Paul Stratton was one of the most interesting characters. One main reason for that is he was able to hear ghosts and the book did an awesome job of explaining how, it wasn’t all magic, there was reasonable explanation which I liked. Now back to the character…. He also had a good sense of humor and was always there when Tara or Steven needed help, he was a very well written character in the story.
bottom line This book was amazing and anyone who is even 1% into ghosts, don’t think just order your book right now because you are going to enjoy it, I surely did! Have fun..
In Haunted we are treated to Eileen Maksyms debut novel and the introduction of the Society for Paranormal Researchers. While it can be described as a paranormal romance, thankfully the romance part doesn't eclipse the very fun and well written story. (I know, half of the readers want the romance, half want the ghosts.)
The group we meet is made up of Tara Matin, Steven Trent, and Paul Stratton. These three are students at a New England university that just happen to hunt ghosts in their free time. They haven't had much luck so far but when a local couple are trying to sell their house which also happens to be haunted they cant help but investigate.
Only when the haunting turns real and a ghost barges in and puts Tara in mortal danger things get a lot more serious than they had been expecting. Even with their love of the paranormal they are just as skeptical as the majority of us and their passion is more of a joke to others than anything else.
With Tara in danger its up to her friends to save her life but the question is, can they?
A truly enjoyable ghost tale Eileen has taken the idea of the modern ghost hunter (equipment and techniques included), the joke that they have often become due to reality television shows, and actually made it a gun ghost novella. I'm curious as to if there will be a follow up to this one and while I preferred the actual tale over the love story that was included, it wasn't overbearing and taking away from the plot like all too many paranormal romances tend to be.
Its a great idea and concept just not executed as well as I would have liked. The chapters seemed stilted and awkward.
This book was a fast read that kept me glued to the pages once I picked it up and started reading. I do wish there was a bit more background information about the characters. I thought the ending was very sweet and I can't wait for the next book.
Haunted was an enjoyable read. As others have said, it is short and I was left wanting a more in-depth look into the friends and their club. The conversations were a little wooden and forced at times. I do think this was a great freshman effort and I'd gladly read any future books by this author.
